Vijaya Sanjay Bhoir, 38, from Nairash in Pimplepada under Thane city police limits who had set herself on fire on Monday, succumbed to her injuries at the civic hospital. Unable to cope with her robber and alcoholic husband, she had set herself afire after pouring kerosene on her body, informed the police.
In her statement with the police, Vijaya, who had burnt herself, said that her unemployed husband was a habitual thief and alcoholic who regularly harassed and tortured her for money.
Her statements with police revealed that, she was so disturbed because of Sanjay who had a habit of stealing and drinking, that she set herself on fire last Monday when there was no one in the house. Her statement read that, she could not take the insult anymore and had to do something to stand by in the neighbourhood. So, she took the extreme step. Vijaya worked as a domestic help in the nearby areas.
Sanjay confessed that his wife was not happy with him because of his stealing and drinking habits, which often led to quarrels. "I was trying to stop myself from drinking, but before I could transform myself, she set herself ablaze," said Bhoir.
We have lodged a case against Bhoir and are investigating into the matter. Just before the incident, the couple had a quarrel on the bad habits of the husband, said police. SPI Nilesh Raut of Thane city police was not available for his comments.
